RC Engineering Academy 2026
Session 1 - Jul 6 - 10
MAD Hobbies RC Engineering Academy
1-Week STEM Curriculum Overview
The MAD Hobbies RC Engineering Academy is a hands-on STEM enrichment program designed for students ages 12–16. Over the course of one week, students build, test, and race a 1/10 scale radio-controlled vehicle while learning core principles of physics, mechanical engineering, electrical systems, and design thinking.
The program emphasizes project-based learning, critical thinking, and real-world application of STEM concepts.
Program Structure
Duration: 1 Week (Monday–Friday)
Daily Schedule: 4 hours per day
Format: Instruction + Hands-On Build + Testing Activities
Curriculum Breakdown
Day 1: Introduction to Engineering & Mechanical Systems
Students are introduced to fundamental engineering concepts and the structure of mechanical systems. Instruction covers force, torque, and rotational motion, with a focus on how gear systems transfer power.
Hands-on Application:
Students begin assembly of the vehicle chassis and drivetrain components.
Day 2: Drivetrain Systems & Vehicle Dynamics
Students explore how power is distributed through a vehicle, including gear trains and differentials. Concepts such as friction, traction, and weight transfer are introduced.
Hands-on Application:
Assembly of differential systems and suspension components.
Day 3: Electrical Engineering Fundamentals
Students learn the basics of electrical systems, including current, voltage, and resistance, as well as how electric motors convert energy into motion.
Hands-on Application:
Installation of motor, electronic speed controller (ESC), servo, and receiver. Students complete basic wiring and system integration.
Day 4: Energy Systems & Aerodynamics
Instruction focuses on battery technology, energy storage, and efficiency, as well as the role of aerodynamics in vehicle performance.
Hands-on Application:
Final vehicle assembly, body installation, and preparation for testing.
Day 5: Testing, Troubleshooting & Performance Optimization
Students apply the engineering design process by testing their vehicles, identifying issues, and making adjustments to improve performance.
Hands-on Application:
Vehicle testing, tuning, and participation in a final race event.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the program, students will:
- Have an understanding of basic mechanical and electrical systems
- Apply physics concepts such as force, friction, and energy transfer
- Build and complete a functional RC vehicle
- Develop problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Participate in performance testing and iterative design improvements
Program Benefits
- Hands-on STEM learning
- Real-world application of engineering concepts
- Development of critical thinking and technical skills
- Increased student engagement in STEM fields
Summary
The RC Engineering Academy provides an engaging and practical introduction to engineering through a structured, project-based curriculum. Students leave the program with both a completed RC vehicle and a foundational understanding of how engineering principles apply to real-world systems.
